2017 was a turbulent year for women - to put it lightly. Yet in the face of adversity, females are rising up. This means ‘femvertising’ (yes, we wince at that term as well) is on fire. We are witnessing a quiet revolution. A watershed moment the advertising industry must harness and support. That’s why we’re here.
WHAT WE DO
At Frank & Lively, we know how to market to women. And we do it with flair. Our work empowers women by rejecting sexist stereotypes in a world saturated with tired narratives. Our approach isn’t just socially responsible. It’s financially savvy. Women are some of the biggest spenders on the planet. It’s about time Adland catered to their needs.
We challenge sexism in advertising, replacing backward narratives with ground-breaking content. From concept to delivery, we offer progressive content to get your brand noticed in all the right ways. Some say sex sells. We say raw creativity in all its grit and glory is far more magnetic.
Mumset is Britain’s most prolific website and online network for parents. We produced a 30-second film for the network, which raised awareness about its ‘Let Girls Be Girls’ campaign. The initiative was launched to highlight the advertising industry’s garish sexualisation of children. Our ground-breaking film sparked widespread debate and went viral, attracting over 10,000 views. It was nominated for two prestigious awards, including best short at the Underwire Film Festival.
SHESAYS AND THE DRUM
The Drum is an international media platform and Europe’s largest marketing website. SheSays is an an-award winning global organisation focused on the advancement, education and empowerment of women in creative fields. We recently joined forces with both organisations to launch and produce an innovative weekly podcast. Topics covered include Britain’s recent charity scandals, diversity in media, and discrimination and harassment in the film industry. Listeners can expect more pithy podcasts exploring sexist advertising, the gender pay gap, equality in the workplace, the impact of AI and more.
Creative Equals is an organisation that promotes diversity in media and advertising. The group hosted an event last year designed to nurture and celebrate female creatives in Britain. Frank & Lively filmed the affair, and produced cutting-edge promotional content relating to it.
H&M is a Swedish retail giant, and one of the world’s leading fashion companies. Over the course of five years, Frank & Lively produced branded material for H&M. We also wrote compelling content for direct mail, brochures, online advertisements and engaging SEO content. We were proud to work extensively on H&M’s international magazine, which challenged traditional stereotypes of femininity by featuring opinionated, alternative, fearless, free-willed, eclectic women.
We worked alongside creative agency Proximity London on a P&G online platform designed to inspire and support mums from all walks of life. The media platform, Supersavvyme, launched in September 2009 and has enabled over 30 P&G brands to connect directly with mothers who visit the site. We produced online ads and created sassy social media material for the online platform. We also made sure that the site’s visitors were treated to practical tips, stories and solid advice on health and wellness.
PwC is a professional services committed to outpacing the world’s biggest tech giants by leading the way in making Britain’s business landscape a more female-friendly space. We create cutting-edge branded content for the firm that casts a spotlight on how it is tackling the UK’s technology’s gender gap head on. The engaging articles are hosted on the Guardian’s website. From the emerging field of cybersecurity to smashing the glass ceiling and beyond, this content explores the most pertinent concerns women in tech face. We speak to inspiring changemakers in the industry who are working to revolutionise it one day at a time.
BFI, BBC and Creative England
Our critically acclaimed film, APOSTASY, boasts all-female leads. Funded by the BBC, BFI and Creative England, this film was nominated for the BFI Sutherland Award for Best British Debut, was on the The Evening Standard British Film Award longlist, won the IWC Schaffhausen Filmmakers Bursary Award, was nominated for the New Directors Award San Sebastian Film Festival and best international film nominee at the Mumbai Film Festival and nominee for the Ubi Banca Prize for best film. The film enjoyed this success thanks to a 50 percent female crew, unheard of in the film industry.
Our founder, Marcie MacLellan, is sought-after speaker on gender issues and a pioneer in the field of femvertising. A trailblazer of the dot-com era, she worked with Canada’s first women in tech organisation in 2001. She writes on gender equality for The Guardian, Financial Times, and other outlets, and is passionate about promoting women in front of and behind the lens.
